The overspeed governor is a key safety control component in an elevator's safety system. If the elevator car exceeds its speed limit or faces a potential free-fall situation, and other safety devices fail to function, the governor triggers a coordinated response with the safety gear or upward protection device to stop the car.
Governors are typically installed on the machine room floor, but they can also be mounted on load-bearing beams. For machine-room-less elevators, they are often located on guide rails or the pit floor.
