A buffer is a crucial safety device in elevators, providing the final layer of protection. It is typically installed in the elevator shaft pit, directly beneath the car and counterweight. When the elevator moves beyond its top or bottom terminal levels due to unforeseen circumstances and fails to stop effectively, the buffer absorbs the impact, preventing the car or counterweight from crashing into the pit or top of the shaft. This ensures the safety of passengers and protects the equipment.
Buffers are classified based on elevator speed:
Energy Dissipating Buffers: Commonly hydraulic buffers, used for higher-speed elevators.
Energy Storing Buffers: Such as polyurethane buffers, designed for elevators with speeds ≤1.0 m/s.
This differentiation ensures the right buffer type is used for specific operational needs.
